My sister

An orphan to me is a person who doesn’t have a sister in his family . I always wonder: how do people make it through life without a sister? because I honestly can’t . When I look at my sister’s eyes, I always find my happiness. Her voice carries me back all my childhood’s memories and then move me forward to the bright future.

My dearest sister, Umamh, came to visit me in Portland during the month of Ramadan and this is why Ramadan this year is really different to me than the last four years.  We sat together during Ramadan breakfast, we remembered all the family memories then we laughed together . When I got sick in the last two week, she didn’t let me walk out of my bed. She brings everything I want to my room by herself. She is so caring.

All I want to say from this post is: if you have a sister in your family, please know how blessed you are. If she asked you  one day to give her a ride so that she can visit her friends especially in Saudi Arabia where women can’t drive, please know that is nothing compare what she has done for you. If one day you were undecided between spending your time with your sister or with your friends in Deywanyah (الديوانية), please know that all your friends no matter how good they are, are nothing compare to the smile of your sister.

“(Your sister) is your mirror, shining back at you with a world of possibilities.  She is your witness, who sees you at your worst and best, and loves you anyway.  She is your partner in crime, your midnight companion, someone who knows when you are smiling, even in the dark.  She is your teacher, your defense attorney, your personal press agent, even your shrink.  Some days, she’s the reason you wish you were an only child”. ~Barbara Alpert

  2. Very impressive 🙂

I got 4 sisters and I’m really blessed for having them in my life..

This part got my attention through out the article: ( please know that all your friends no matter how good they are, are nothing compare to the smile of your sister.)

it’s just so touchy, i did it once in 2005 and i’ve never forgiven myself that i left her alone all night long just to hang out with my friends!! That was selfish but now her smile means the world to me!

    Thank God

  5. Made me want to call my sister just to say hello. Our relationship has been strained for a lot of years, but in my heart, it is the relationship you speak of in this post. Thanks for reminding me of what has been and what can be again.

  6. I have no sisters , but I have two younger brothers who mean the world to me…
I don’t really miss not having a sister because my mother is my sister…and all my students are my younger sisters…I just miss being the youngest sister or daughter-in-law …or the youngest (anything) 🙂
