The Struggle to Write

Since I left Portland, I have been struggling to write anything in my blog. I felt the loss of the most important thing in my life, which is the ability to express my feeling.  Sometimes, I feel attempting to write  is like giving birth to words, painful in the beginning and may require Caesarean surgery.

I met a lot of people here in Saudi who have never been into writing experience in their whole life. They feel that they have nothing to write about! nothing to share! nothing to express! They misunderstood the main purpose of writing. You don’t have to have a good story in order to write. Good writers don’t write because they want other people to appraise them. They write because it is their passionate and they want to experience this unique way of self reflection.

It is indeed sad that some people have never felt the joy of writing until now. Their moments, feelings, ideas and most importantly their self reflection, went by with no record. I have read somwhere that we write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.

I think we should all have the courage to write our stories, regardless of how insignificant and senseless they might be.  The struggle to write is only in the first step, once you pass it, you will see your hands moving passionately to write your story and then, your whole life will change.

So, let’s write and write and write until the last breath of our life.

  1. Silence often speaks a language that is more powerful than written or verbal expression. Do not see your silence (or retreat from writing) as a negative thing. When people write too frequently, they lose the beauty of meaningful thought. It’s only through silence and deep thought (retreat) where one conjures up wholesome creativity. If anything, there’s an inflation of verbal/written expression that is devoid of anything meaningful — people these days are willing to express every mundane detail of their lives over social media. Creativity is born out of periods of silence, out of pain, out of endurance, out of struggle — embrace this treasure.

  2. Asalamu alaikum wa ramatullahi wa barakatuh, I believe that you could write about a myriad of things now that you are back in KSA. I think that we all miss your writing deeply and that everyone of us would be indeed really interested to follow you in the Magic Kingdom. You are not even obliged to talk about KSA or things around KSA. Just write. Express your thoughts. Maybe you will help others to get back to the path of writing by doing so … (like me) Wa Salam,

  3. @escortdiary, Yes I totally agree with you. Silence is important factor in creative writing. We all need these moments when we sit and listen to the inside voice and then contemplate the beauty of writing.

@enajmah, Life here in Saudi is full of stories, and most of them untold. I will try my best to share as much as possible 🙂

  4. Hello Murtadha! Glad to see you again here. I took down my blog way back 2013 because I no longer had the time. It is sad, I still do want to continue but then life gets in the way. It’s an irony that I teach writing courses and I don’t write. Hopefully I will find time to write again, and maybe not just in a blog. I have an idea for a short story that’s been in my head for years and I hope to put it down on paper (I don’t like using the laptop for first drafts haha!). Keep writing.

  5. Hi Murtadha,
I, like the others who posted above, am glad to see this post and am hopeful that many more will follow. I’ve missed reading your insightful and reflective posts.

  6. I just got into blogging as a hobby. I think it requires an introvert to understand writing and reading blogs. Fyi, your posts are amazing! take your time when you write. It takes a nice coffee with a clear mind to fill in the logs.

  7. Murtadha, it has been almost three years since you haven’t written a thing. I am glad to see this post. I have also received an email that you have finally posted something in Arabic about a visit to the cemetery. Come on man, there is a lot of things you can write about while you are in Saudi, I am sure of that, hopefully to hear more about your reflection about life in Saudi.

  9. You actually make it appear really easy along with your
presentation however I find this matter to bbe actually something that I feel I
would by no means understand. It sort of feels too complicated and very broad for
me. I am looking forward to your next submit, I will attempt to get the hold of it!

stock market is really a risky business. The reason behind having multiple email
accounts is based on the fact that if your single email account is taken then the
individual who has that account can have all your
